Puma Expands Its Use Of Recycled Materials And Will Purchase 100% Sustainable Polyester By 2025

Puma manufactured seven out of ten products with better materials last year, as it further expanded the use of recycled materials.

 

Puma, a sports goods manufacturer headquartered in Germany, stated that better materials such as cotton and viscose fibers from certified sources or recycled polyester have a smaller environmental footprint in terms of carbon dioxide emissions and enable the company to improve the environmental impact of the entire product line.

 

Since 2017, the company has been able to reduce carbon dioxide emissions from materials by 32%. However, Puma believes that despite significant sales growth, overall carbon dioxide emissions can still be reduced by an additional 7%.In its 2022 Sustainable Development Report, Puma stated that although it is expected to achieve its goal of manufacturing nine out of ten products with better materials by 2025, the company will continue to use renewable energy to power 100% of its offices, stores, and warehouses in 2022.

 

The company's suppliers have also increased the use of renewable energy in the supply chain, with most of Puma's carbon emissions coming from the supply chain.Puma's core suppliers account for about 80% of its production, and it is said that their renewable energy consumption has more than doubled in just one year, from 0.2% in 2017 to 11% in 2022.

 

This is achieved by installing large-scale solar systems and purchasing renewable energy certificates at selected suppliers. By 2025, Puma's goal is to double this number and make its core suppliers obtain a quarter of the energy demand from Renewable resource.In addition, over 50% of the polyester fibers used in the clothing and accessories of the German brand come from recycled materials, and the company has also begun to expand the use of recycled cotton.

 

At the same time, Puma stated that it has made progress in experiments on Forever Better, including the suede experiment for testing biodegradable sports shoes - RE: SUEDE, and the fiber experiment aimed at expanding more advanced polyester recycling technology - RE: FIBRE.
